Peer support counselling for women

Elowen’s peer support counselling for women is a safe space where women can connect and receive support and empowerment through different stages, challenges and transitions in their lives. Peer support counselling is ideal for women of all ages - designed to provide effective emotional, social, and practical support. Below we list the benefits of peer support counselling and explain how peer support counselling differs to traditional counselling approaches.

Elowen Counselling is run by Jen Rowe, an experienced peer support counsellor. Combining her expertise with her experience as a woman, mum of three teenagers, experience with health issues and menopause, Jen takes a holistic approach that aims to provide connection alongside practical support that fosters positive change. Here are the benefits of peer support counselling and what makes peer support counselling different to help you determine if peer support counselling is right for you.

How is peer support counselling different to traditional counselling?

Unlike traditional forms of counselling that tend to lean on clinical expertise, peer support counselling focuses on shared lived experiences. Speaking to and receiving support from someone who can relate to you and what you’re going through whilst providing a space that enables you to feel seen, supported and listened to can be incredibly effective & powerful, especially for women.

Peer support counselling is a non-heirarchal form of support from someone who’s been where you are and truly understands where you’re at. Peer support is often more flexible and informal compared to traditional counselling methods which many women find a more natural fit for the support they’re seeking.

The benefits of Peer Support Counselling

One of the biggest benefits of peer support counselling is connection.

Women are designed to seek and thrive on connection. There are many studies that show women respond more positively when connecting with their peers. Connection allows us to co-regulate, bond, feel understood, relate to others, empower and champion each other. As mentioned above, having a more informal approach to support can also be beneficial for those that resonate with less rigid or ‘spoken to or at’ styles of support or discussions.

The important thing to note here is that there are many different styles of support available and you get to choose a style that aligns with who you are as a person.
